Healthy gums are more important than you may have noticed. As a gentle tissue that supports your teeth, gums play a big role in keeping your teeth and jaw secure. Also, along with making your smile a gorgeous feature, gums reveal your general health.

A healthy gum may keep away gum disease, the main cause of tooth loss. Gum disease may also increase the risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and infertility, among others. Fortunately, there are ways to keep your gums in good shape for a healthier life. Here are five tips to keep your gums healthy.

Brush Your Gums, Use Mouthwash, and Floss Daily

It may sound obvious, but brushing and flossing your teeth are still the best ways to keep your teeth and gum in good shape. When brushing your teeth, gently rub your gumline with your toothbrush and remove the soft plaque that tends to attach itself along your gumline. The best toothbrush to use is one that has soft bristles to avoid hurting your gum.

After brushing, rinse your mouth with an antiseptic mouthwash to wash away food particles and to prevent tartar from forming. Do not forget to floss your teeth and underneath your gums to remove food remains that you may have missed while brushing.

Quit Smoking

Smoking is not a healthy habit. It weakens your immune system and puts you at risk of developing gum disease. Gum disease usually weakens your jawbone and gum. When this happens, your teeth lack support and begin to fall off.

Smoking also causes tooth discoloration, bad breath, a buildup of bacteria in teeth, swelling of salivary glands, and bone damage within your jaw.

Eat Lots of Fresh Fruits and Veggies

Fresh produce such as apples, carrots, and green vegetables are healthy foods for your gums. They provide nutrients that make your gum tissue healthy and stimulate the flow of blood into your gums.

Also, adding fresh produce to your meals strengthens your immune system and helps it to fight the signs of gum disease and other health issues.

Drink Lots of Water

Water is a natural cleaner. It keeps your mouth hydrated and helps you produce healthy saliva. Water also washes away the bacteria inside your mouth. Drink water that has a healthy amount of fluoride to strengthen your teeth at the same time. You can drink water directly from your tap if the tap water is safe for drinking.

See Your Dentist Every Six Months

People with healthy gums and teeth usually only need a dental visit every six months. At these checkups, the dentist cleans away any hardened buildup between your teeth and underneath your gums.

This helps to avoid gum disease and loss of bone inside the jaw. If you have had a history of gum disease, you may need to visit your dentist every three to four months. If your gum is sensitive, swollen, red, or bleeding, it is time to have your gums checked.
